Updated: Homework for Week of December 17-21

Starting this week I will have the students choose two afternoons they will go on xtramath.org as part of their homework.  I will let them choose the nights during the week since they may have activities going on on certain days.  I would like them to still go on at least once on the weekends.  If the students know their math facts it will really help them with the long multiplication we are doing and division and fractions which will come later in the year.

Good Bye Miss Rossi

Today we had to say good bye to Miss Rossi who has been working in our classroom since September.  She is going to school at UNH and would like to become a teacher after she graduates.

Thank you so much for everyone who donated to her Barnes and Noble gift card.  She enjoyed reading all the thoughtful cards the students made for her.

Miss Rossi made our class a huge thank you card.  Look at all those adjectives to describe our great 4B students!

Holiday Mission and Free Rice Website

Thank you to all who have donated to the holiday mission.  If you would like to donate please have cash or checks (written to Trish Ruffner) in by this Friday and gifts by next Monday.

We tried out the Free Rice website on the Promethean Board last Friday.  Students felt great knowing each multiplication problem they got correct helped the United Nations World Food Programme donate rice to end hunger around the world.  This would be a great website to go on to practice your multiplication facts. Click on the Free Rice words in the first sentence to click on the link or you can go to our Moodle page for a link.

Few Highlights From Last Week

We were busy last week.  Here are a few highlights of the week:

In science, we did many different tests to help us gather information about different mystery minerals.  We will use the information we discovered this week to help us determine what the names of the mystery minerals are.

Students received their next pen pal letters and have begun writing rough drafts back to them.  They have been working on sticking to 3-4 topics to write to their pen pals and breaking their letters into correct paragraphs.

We also started learning some different watercolor painting techniques which we will use to create winter realistic fiction stories.

Collecting USA Postcard

Our social studies curriculum for the year focuses on both New Hampshire and the regions of the United States.  If you or a family member travels or lives around the country our class would love to get a postcard that tells a little about the place.  We hope to get a least one postcard from each state by the end of the year.

Postcards can be mailed to:
                                      Miss Beauchesne’s Class
                                                   Stratham Memorial School
                                                   39 Gifford Farm Road
                                                   Stratham, NH 03885
I will keep an updated list of which states we are still looking for on our Moodle page.

Promethean Board Has Arrived!!!!!

Our class was very happy Tuesday morning to find our Promethean Board had finally arrived and was installed in our classroom.  We are still learning everything about what it can do, but it is very exciting.

We used it in math to help us learn about decimals and place value.  We can use virtual manipulatives to help us compare decimals.

We also have been working on a punctuation unit in writing and did some work with commas using the Promethean Board.

We started talking at the end of last week about the elections and who can vote in the United States.  We will continue to talk about the Electoral College and voting this week.

Last Friday, we tried a new app on the iPads called Basher's Presidents.  The app is set up like a timeline for students to click on different presidents to learn interesting facts about each of them.  Students who had all their work turned in started working on a scavenger hunt with a partner using this app.  Many students learned some interesting a facts about our presidents.

Field Trip to Old York

Our class had a great time visiting Old York yesterday.  We learned so much and did many different hands-on activities relating to our Colonial unit.

Everyone looked great in their costumes!

Textiles During Colonial Days

Carding the wool was a lot of work
Everyone had a chance to use the loom

We did a little stitching too

Colonial Games
The class played many games made of wood and most of the children said they were more fun than the electronic games we play today.

All the students had their silhouettes drawn

Colonial Cooking

 Churning the butter

We ate a delicious dinner.  We had stew, cornbread, biscuits, and apple crisp.

 One Room Schoolhouse

We read from their primers.

We did a little math on slates.

We even learned about some of the punishments given to students during the Colonial days.

I hope you enjoy these pictures of our day. Thank you so much to all of our chaperones!

New iPad Apps

Students who had all their work caught up this week and last week were able to try two new apps on the iPads.

One of the apps we used was Sakura Quick Math.

Students practiced all four of the math operations and used their fingers to write the answers on the screens.

Many students were able to set new records of the number of problems completed in the time given.

The second app we tried was The Opposites.  It pops up words and students have to click on the words which are antonyms.  We even had some of our vocabulary words appear.

You may want to try these apps out at home too.  If you know a great educational app I would love to hear about it.

Welcome to 4B's Blog

I am going to try to post information and pictures about exciting things happening in 4B on this blog page.  I will continue to have my Moodle page open, so parents and students can still access websites and things on there.  I plan to try to start moving some of the most used websites over to this site, so hopefully this will be a place for you to get all your information about our class. Also, I will start to post the homework for the week on this page.  I will continue to post the homework on Moodle for a few more weeks while we transition over to the blog.

Please enter your email on the right side of the page if you would like to get an email when I update this page.
