UNH Stembassadors - Friday

The UNH Stembassadors came on Friday to work with the fourth and fifth graders in our classrooms.  Our challenge was to work with teams to create a model of an amusement ride similar to the Tower of Terror.  The ride had to drop down fast and still be safe so we didn't lose any passengers.  Here is a few pictures of the activity.  I think I missed a few groups, but everyone had a great time.

Erosion Prevention Experiment

We tested our plans of ways we thought we could prevent erosion from happening.  There were barriers built, tubes used, and rocks to break the water up.  All the groups did great thinking.  We had many ideas work well and we had a few floods that eventually broke down barriers.

Erosion Experiments

We have been learning about erosion during our geology unit.  Students have been experimenting with changing the slope of the land and having a flood and watching the changes in the "land".  We will be learning about ways people try to prevent erosion and then coming up with a plan to test with our groups.

Game for Area Model

Here is a great game to practice the area model.  There are three levels.  I would start with the first level and move up.  You may need scrap paper for the addition because it is set up slightly different than how we did it in class.

Math Game and Videos with Methods for Long Multiplication

Here is a great game for practicing multiplying by multiples of 10.  Click here. Then just click play and see how high you can get.

Here is a video on the Area Model (sometimes called the Box Method).  You only need to watch until the 4 minute point.  Click below.

This is the best video I have been able to find for the Partial Product Multiplication Method.  Click here.  I would like to see the multiplication on the right side (she shows on the left).  I hope this helps.  There will also be a sheet in your child's binder.

Here is a link to two Traditional Method videos. Click below
