iReady

Some of the SMS classes are piloting a computer program called iReady and our class is one of the classes is part of the pilot.  All the students in the class took an short assessment which looks at all the different areas of math.  I can only have 10 of the students do the lessons which are aligned to where they came out on their assessment during the pilot..  The kids know if they have access to the lessons and have been very engaged in the lessons.  Some students will go back to topics previously taught in this year or in past years which were not mastered while others are moving on to new topics to keep them challenged.

These lessons will be done at school as part of our math workshop, but can also be done at home by clicking on the link on my class blog under math websites.  It would be great if they could do a lesson a couple of days a week.  I will sometimes give this as homework, but they can always go on if they have extra time.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

These four were the students who tied.

Our 4B Winner - He will go on to the fourth and fifth grade bee and represent our class.

Old York Field Trip

We had such a great day today on our field trip.  I hope your child told you all about everything they learned today.  We made Jamaica Biscuits, learned about their cooking, worked with textiles, went to a one room schoolhouse, wrote with a quill pen, and played colonial games.  Here are some pictures from our day.

Thank you to all our parents who helped chaperone on this trip!!!

Elapsed Time

We started reviewing telling time last week.  We will be working on elapsed time this week.  One strategy we will be using to find how much time has passed between a start and end time is using a number line.  This is a great video with two kids explaining how to use the number line if your child needs a review after we get started.

Book Groups

We have started book groups at the end of this week during our reading time.  The students all received their books on Wednesday the book they will be reading and a calendar showing their meeting days and what chapters they have to have read by the days they meet.  I have explained to the students that the days with a * mean they will be meeting and must come with the reading done (example:  *Ch 1-3 = chapters 1, 2, and 3 must be read for the day).  They should also write down notes with thoughts and questions to bring to their group. They may use time in class to read their books when their group is not meeting, but some of the reading will need to be done at home.

Here is a copy of the calendar in case they forget theirs over the next few weeks.

Lots of Team Building

We have done lots of team building activities over the first two weeks of school to build our 4B community.

We "Helped Harry" by building towers for him to sit on top and be able to see around our classroom.  Students had to only use objects in their paper bags and work as a team.  We talked about how important it is to let everyone share their ideas and to listen to others

We also tried to build the tallest marshmallow towers using toothpicks and marshmallows.  Unfortunately, this was a really big challenge because it was a very warm afternoon, so we ended up with a sticky mess, but the students still worked hard.
