Regions of the USA

We started to study the Northeast region before our vacation.  We will be doing a larger regions project  with the other fourth grade classes.  Students should be practicing the states and capitals for each region as we move through them.  There will be a map test where students will need to identify the states and capitals on a map.  They will be given a list of the capitals, but they will need to remember the names of the states.

All of the students have a Northeast map and set of flash cards in their homework binder to study with.  I have encouraged them to practice a little each night and we are doing a quick practice each day at school.

Our first region map quiz will be on Wednesday, May 6th on the Northeast.

Homework for Week of April 20-24

*Students should be going on xtramath.org at least three afternoons during the week and one day over the weekend if they are still working o this.

Read for 15 minutes (Book Group Reading)
Math -First half of Review Sheet- test Wednesday
Spelling- cut out words and do a regular sort (You don't need to write down.)

Tuesday (Day 5):
Read for 15 minutes (Book Group Reading)
Math - Finish Review Sheet - test tomorrow

Spelling - regular sort and record on lined paper

Wednesday (Day 6):

Spelling - speed sort (record two times in your assignment book)

Lowell Mills Field Trip

Wow, we had such a great day today at the Lowell Mills.  It was a great wrap up for our Industrial Revolution unit and we even lucked out with beautiful weather.  Our guide was very impressed with how much the kids knew and the questions they asked.  I was impressed too!

We started the day by visiting one of the mills which still produces some cloth.  There was only 10 machines on in the room and it was still so loud we couldn't hear someone standing right next to us.  

Then some students became scientists and looked at different water wheels to discover which wheel would be the best for the mills to use.

The other students worked on teams to build a canal system and then tested it to see if they needed to make adjustments.

 

Then we went for a trolley ride to another mill and saw canals and turbines which powered the mills.

It is hard to believe these canals were dug by hand.

At the end of the day we did a quick tour of the boarding house.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss with Read Across America

Each day this week will have a different theme to celebrate Dr. Seuss                       and Read Across America week.

Monday: "Fox in Socks Day" - wear a crazy pair of socks
Tuesday:  "Cat in the Hat Day" - wear your favorite hat
Wednesday:  "Wacky Wednesday" - wear mismatching clothes
Thursday:  We will be on our field trip, so students can dress like their favorite book character on Friday.
Friday:  "Drop Everything and Read"- You can bring in a small pillow or stuffed animal to read with.

Geometry Street Map Project

The students started working on a rough draft of their Street Maps.  They have a list of geometry terms which are required to be on their map.  We will work on them again on Monday and then they will be coming home to finish.  I have included project description and rubric below in case they forget to bring it home.  They should use the piece of large construction paper I will be giving them on Monday.  This project is due Tuesday, March 31st.
