Erosion Experiments

Last week we studied how erosion happens with water. Everyone had a job to do and then they recorded observations in their notebooks.  We then shared what we noticed as a class.

Then we looked at what can happen when a flood occurs.

This week we will be trying to find ways to prevent erosion or the amount of damage caused by erosion.

Methods for Long Multiplication

Here is a great game for practicing multiplying by multiples of 10.  Click here. Then just click play and see how high you can get.

Here is a video on the Area Model (sometimes called the Box Method).  You only need to watch until the 4 minute point.  Click below.

This is the best video I have been able to find for the Partial Product Multiplication Method.  Click here.  I would like to see the multiplication on the right side (she shows on the left).  I hope this helps.  There will also be a sheet in your child's binder.

Here is a link to two Traditional Method videos. Click below

Math Facts

We are moving on to more of our math units where students need to know their math facts well, so they can focus on the new concepts.  Multiplication and division facts are the facts many of the students need to practice the most.  Students can go on xtramath as often as they would like and flashcards can be helpful.  I am sending home paper copies of some of the games we have played at school and they can be played at home.

Here are a few other ways for the students to practice their math facts:

Freerice is a website where the U.N. will donate 10 grains of rice for every correct problem.  It's a great way for kids to practice their facts while helping others in need.

Quick Math is a great app for practicing math facts.  The students use their finger to write the answers on the screen.  There is also a Quick Math Pack which includes 4 of their app.

Math Duel - Students can practice all the operations and play by themselves or against someone. Their opponent can be doing a different operation, so it is great if they have a sibling in a younger grade.

I hope these help if you are looking for some ways for your child to practice their math facts.  Please have your child share with me any great game, websites, or apps they have enjoyed for practicing math facts.
