ixl.com - Great Math Website

I hope you are all having a great weekend.  On Friday, I had students bring home a letter about the website ixl.com in their Friday Folder.  This is a great website for kids to practice different math skills we have already covered or preview new ones to come.  When you go to the website the students will need to log in with the same username and password which they use to log in to the computers at school.  

Students can choose a grade level to start with and I have encouraged the students to start with the third grade level to help them get used to how the program works.

Then they can look through the list of topics and choose lessons they might need to work on or ones similar to what we are studying in class.  Our next unit will include angles and we will be doing a lot with fractions during the rest of the year, so those might be good topics to start with.

This program does not practice basic math facts, so I am still encouraging students to practice them using xtramath.org and the backs of their mad minutes.  I know studying the basic facts is not something most students like to do, but it is so important as we work on longer multiplication, division, and fractions.

I hope you and your child enjoy ixl.com.  Our class previewed it on Thursday during computers and as a class we answered over 2,000 problems.  I was pretty impressed.

Fifty Nifty Club

We had our first student of year make it into the Fifty Nifty Club today.  She was able to label all 50 of the states on a blank United States Map.  Congratulations!!!!

There were also at least 6 students who had in between 42-49 states labelled correctly!  I think some of them will be joining the club next time.  There are many games and a blank map to print out and practice with on our class Moodle page.

Collecting USA Postcards

Homework for Week of December 31-January 4

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a great vacation and holidays.  It is hard to believe it is already January. 

I wanted to remind you that fourth graders do not need to wear snowpants, but they must have boots on in order to go in the snow.  I always encourage the kids to bring snowpants, boots, mittens, and hats if they are going to want to play in the snow because it isn't much fun to sit in wet clothes for the end of the day.

Updated: Homework for Week of December 17-21

Starting this week I will have the students choose two afternoons they will go on xtramath.org as part of their homework.  I will let them choose the nights during the week since they may have activities going on on certain days.  I would like them to still go on at least once on the weekends.  If the students know their math facts it will really help them with the long multiplication we are doing and division and fractions which will come later in the year.

Good Bye Miss Rossi

Today we had to say good bye to Miss Rossi who has been working in our classroom since September.  She is going to school at UNH and would like to become a teacher after she graduates.  

Thank you so much for everyone who donated to her Barnes and Noble gift card.  She enjoyed reading all the thoughtful cards the students made for her.

Miss Rossi made our class a huge thank you card.  Look at all those adjectives to describe our great 4B students!
