Old York Field Trip

We had a fabulous day learning about Colonial times.  The students cooked, learned about textiles, played games, and went to a one room schoolhouse.  Here are some pictures from the day:

Thank you so much to all our chaperones.  I appreciate all your help throughout the day.

SMS Garden

Our class helped clean out some of the flower beds in the SMS garden last Thursday.  The students  got the beds ready for bulbs to be planted by other classes.  We have such hard workers in our class.

Book Group Calendars

We will be starting book groups this week during our reading time.  The students will all receive their books and a calendar showing their meeting days and what chapters they have to have read by the days they meet.  I will be explaining to the students the days with a * mean their group will be meeting and must come with the reading done (example:  *Ch 1-3 = chapters 1, 2, and 3 must be read for the day).  They should also write down notes with thoughts and questions to bring to their group. They may use time in class to read their book when their group is not meeting, but some of the reading will need to be done at home.

Here is a copy of the calendar in case they forget theirs over the next few weeks.

Realistic Fiction

We have started our realistic fiction stories.  Students brainstormed their stories and have worked on their crayon resist paintings this week.  The paintings have helped the students gather their ideas for their stories as they rehearse the story ideas with classmates and teachers.

Pennies for Puerto Rico

We have had a great start to our Pennies for Puerto Rico project.  We have one more week to bring in any loose change.  Thanks for your help and donations!

Watercolor Painting Techniques

Last week we learned 6 different watercolor techniques which we will be using in our first longer writing piece.  Students have been brainstorming realistic fiction ideas.  This week we will be painting our pages and starting the writing for the beginnings of our books.  Students are often able to get their ideas easily by looking at their paintings.
