Having Fun with Rocks

We have so many students in 4B who have been really excited to learning about rocks and their properties.  We have been working on doing observations of different rocks and learning about the three types of rocks.  We are finishing up this part of the unit with the students identifying the 12 "Mystery Rocks" they were given.  Students have been working so hard with partners to gather their data.

Starting Our Geology Unit

We started our geology unit last week.  We read the book Everybody Needs a Rock and then wrote our own rules for finding the best rock.
Then we read If You Find a Rock.  Each student wrote a description of their rock without letting anyone see their rock.  We talked about different properties we can use to describe rocks, such as, texture, color, size, and patterns.  Here are some pictures of the students listening to descriptions of rocks and then trying to choose which rock they was being described.

Ways to Practice Math Facts

Some parents were asking about ways to help their child master their math facts.  Here are a few ways I have found useful and fun for the kids.   Math facts are one thing your child really needs to have memorized as we move on to harder math skills.  Xtramath.org is great, but students really need to do it often.

There are some links on our class blog for practicing math facts.  The students have liked Free Rice and it helps people in need with donations for rice from the United Nations.  The kids have liked having competitions to see which group can get the most rice to donate.

The app Sakura Quick Math is a great app for practicing math facts.  It recognizes almost all handwriting written on the screen

I hope these help if you are looking for some ways for your child to practice their math facts.

Field Trip to Old York

We had an awesome day on Friday at Old York.  The students enjoyed learning about Colonial cooking, schools, daily life, games, and textiles.

At the end of the day we did a little survey to see who would rather live during the Colonial days instead of today

Thank you to all our chaperones for their help throughout the day.

Starting Book Groups

We will be starting book groups this week during our reading time.  The students all got the book they will be reading and a calendar showing their meeting days and what chapters they have to have read by the days they meet.  I have explained to the students that the days with a * mean they will be meeting and must come with the reading done (example:  *Ch 1-3 = chapters 1, 2, and 3 must be read for the day).  They should also write down notes with thoughts and questions to bring to their group. They may use time in class to read their books when their group is not meeting, but some of the reading will need to be done at home.

Here is a copy of the calendar in case they forget theirs over the next few weeks.

Helping Our Community

SMS has done great collecting over 450 cans for our Canstruction Food Drive.  We are continuing to add any cans you are willing to donate.  Thank you to all the families who have already sent donations in.  We are hoping to make a wolf out of the cans.

Also, SMS is helping Wonderland Thrift Shop of Stratham again this year with hosting a coat drive. We are looking for gently used or new winter clothing including coats, jackets, hats, scarves, mittens, gloves and boots for the whole family. There is a box across from Nurse Lily's office door. Feel free to place donations there.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Practicing the Scientific Method with Gobstoppers

Last week we continued doing science experiments.  One of the experiments we did was put four gobstoppers in water and then we observed what happens to them.  Many of the students were surprised that the colors did not mix in the water.  Here are some pictures of the class working on this experiments.
