Fun with Magnets

We have started our next unit in science this week on magnets and electricity.  We have done a few experiments this week with magnets.  Students explored ways to make the ring magnets "float" on their pencils today.  Students used what they learned about how opposite magnetic poles are attracted to each other and like poles repel.

Here are a few pictures from the week:

Thanks for the Postcards

Thank you to everyone who sent our class postcards or has asked friends or relatives to send them.  We are off to a great start and have received 7 different states so far!  Please ask friends and relatives to write a few facts about the state, so we can learn about the country.  We have received quite a few blank cards which are great, but it is nice for the kids to learn a few facts from each one.

Post cards can be mailed to Miss Beauchesne's Class
                                            Stratham Memorial School
                                            39 Gifford Farm Road
                                            Stratham, NH 03848

Thank you so much for your help with this project!  We will continue to collect through the end of the year.

Last week we practices finding factors and multiples in many different ways.  One of the kids' favorite games was Factor Flip.

Some students also worked on this challenge problem to find where the best spot was to stand in the fair line by using multiples.  They showed many different ways to solve this problem.

Book Groups are Meeting

On Friday, the students were divided into groups for the book groups which we are doing for the month of November.  Each child received a copy of the book and a calendar with the day's their group will be meeting along with the chapters they should have read.  If your child forgets their calendar I have attached a copy of each groups below.  They will meet on the * days and they need to have the chapters listed on that day done by the time they come to school on that day.  I am strongly encouraging students to write down thoughts or questions on while they are reading to share with their group.  They are all excited to get started this week.

Olde York Field Trip

We had a great day on our field trip to Olde York.  The students learned so much about Colonial life.  At the end of the day about half of the students said they would rather live in Colonial days rather than 2014.  Here are some of our pictures of the day:

Thanks to all of our chaperones for helping on our trip!

Ways to Practice Math Facts

We are moving on to more of our math units where students need to know their math facts well, so they can focus on the new concepts.  Multiplication and division facts are the facts many of the students need to practice the most.  Students can go on xtramath as often as they would like and flashcards can be helpful.

Here are a few other ways for the students to practice their math facts:

Freerice is a website where the U.N. will donate 10 grains of rice for every correct problem.  It's a great way for kids to practice their facts while helping others in need.

Quick Math is a great app for practicing math facts.  The students use their finger to write the answers on the screen.  There is also a Quick Math Pack which includes 4 of their app.

Math Duel - Students can practice all the operations and play by themselves or against someone. Their opponent can be doing a different operation, so it is great if they have a sibling in a younger grade.

I hope these help if you are looking for some ways for your child to practice their math facts.  Please have your child share with me any great game, websites, or apps they have enjoyed for practicing math facts.

Island Conquer

Here are some pictures of a math game we played last week called Island Conquer.  It helped us practice plotting coordinates, finding the perimeter of rectangles, and addition.

Start Practicing Telling Time

Our next math unit will be on time.  A large part of the unit is on elapsed time, so students will need to be able to read an analog clock to the minute.  This is usually a skill students needs some practice with.  I would strongly encourage students to go on iXL.com and practice under the time sections in second and third grade before doing fourth grade.  I will show them how to do the elapsed time in a variety of ways in class.  Then they can choose which works best for them.

Math videos to help with homework

Last year, my students found it helpful to watch short videos to help them with new and more complex math concepts.  We found the great videos made by  LearnZillion.com and Math Antics.

Here is a video on variables which might help with some of our lessons and homework this week.
Click Here.  You should not need to register.  You can click on the top right corner where is asks if you are a student and then it will take you to the video.

I will continue to post short videos throughout the year to help with homework.  I hope you find them helpful.

Mystery Minerals

Our class has been learning about the different properties of minerals.  Last week we did a streak and iron test to start gathering data to help us identify our 10 "Mystery Minerals".  The students have done such a great job creating charts to organize their data while working together to do the different tests.
